Netherlands: Citizens pay tribute to journalist killed

Many people passed today in Amsterdam in front of the coffin of Peter R. De Vries, a Dutchman journalist who was murdered two weeks ago to pay tribute and lay flowers in front of his roses-covered coffin. Following the wave of emotion that swept the country after the murder of the journalist, a well-known figure in the Netherlands, people were invited to come for the last “goodbye” at the Royal Carré Theater, on the banks of the Amstel, where his body was transported, reports the RES.

Peter R. de Vries, a journalist who specializes in criminal cases, died last Thursday at the age of 64, after being seriously injured by bullets on July 6 in Amsterdam. National “hero”, was known in Netherlands for his role in many criminal cases. He often appeared as a representative of the victims or in the close circle of key witnesses. He had received many threats to his life during his career. De Vries had just left the TV studio after a talk show, in which he had intervened as a guest.

“It’s important to say goodbye,” said Brenda van Kevorden, 66, in front of the theater, where a queue of hundreds of meters was forming. City officials distributed bottles of water to those waiting their turn, some holding flowers and wearing T-shirts with the face of the journalist, whose funeral will take place tomorrow, Thursday, in a close circle. “It was very important for the Netherlands. “He did such good things,” said Ruth van Rosmalin.

“He was our hero. He defended people who could not do it themselves “, he continued, hoping that he would be able to enter the theater where the coffin of Peter R. de Vries is displayed, covered with red roses and accompanied by a large photo of the journalist. Many left the theater with tears in their eyes. “Peter R. de Vries did not deserve such luck. “He was still very young and what happened made me very sad,” said Ton Trump, 61.

Two suspects have been remanded in custody

Two suspects have been remanded in custody following the attack. According to Dutch media, these are Camille E., a 35-year-old Polish citizen from Mauritius (central Netherlands) and Delano G., a 21-year-old Rotterdam resident. The attack provoked many reactions from journalists and politicians, even across the Dutch border.

Since last year, Peter R. de Vries has been the adviser and main witness in the trial of Riduan Tagi, who was named, before his arrest in 2019 in Dubai, as the most wanted criminal in the Netherlands mainly due to a major case drugs.
