Netherlands: Expert group advises government to impose partial lockdown

In the Netherlands, the main advisory committee for the management of the covid-19 pandemic today recommended to the government to impose a partial lockdown, the first since the summer in Western Europe, putting pressure on the government to take drastic and unpopular measures to deal with the epidemic.

The caretaker Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte is expected to take a decision on the new measures tomorrow, Friday, following the recommendations of the Epidemic Management Group, NOS television reported.

Measures under consideration include canceling events, suspending cinemas and theaters and limiting the opening hours of cafes and restaurants, NOS reported. Schools will remain open.

The Dutch government often, but not always, follows the recommendations of the expert group.

The imposition of new lockdowns is something that many developed countries do not consider after the launch of the immunization campaign against covid-19, despite the fact that in many areas there is a rapid rise in cases.

Countries such as Britain rely on a booster dose of covid-19 vaccine to boost herd immunity and prevent their health systems from collapsing during the winter.

Until now, the Netherlands has offered booster doses only to the immunocompromised. Despite the fact that the rate of covid-19 vaccination among adults is close to 85%, hospitals in some parts of the Netherlands have been forced to limit their other services in order to take care of patients with covid-19.

Last week, authorities in the Netherlands reinstated compulsory mask use and extended the use of sanitary pads to more areas.

The Dutch Institute for Health (RIVM) announced on Tuesday that the number of weekly cases had risen by 45% to 76,790, or more than 400 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
