Netherlands: Protest in Amsterdam canceled after Rotterdam riots

LAST UPDATE: 12.49

The demonstration scheduled for today in Amsterdam against the measures to deal with the pandemic was canceled after the violent incidents that took place on Friday night in Rotterdam, the organizers announced.

“Hell broke out in Rotterdam last night,” United We Stand Europe said on its Facebook page, referring to the chaos in the port and the injury of at least seven people.

Dozens of protesters were arrested after the riots.

Protesters were protesting against health measures and the government’s plan to ban unvaccinated people from accessing certain areas.

The United We Stand Europe organization noted that it “did not consider it right” for the demonstration to take place in Amsterdam, after this development.

“It was horrible to see riots and extreme violence against police and firefighters last night in Rotterdam,” said Security and Justice Minister Fred Grapperhaus, referring to “significant property damage”. “The men and women who take to the streets every day for our own safety have been bombarded with stones and sparklers. The police and the ministry are doing everything they can to locate, prosecute and punish the rioters,” he added.

Local media, however, reported that a demonstration scheduled for today in the city of Brenda will take place normally.

Many reported on social media sites that someone had been killed in the Rotterdam riots, but city police denied this information.
