Netherlands: Regulator says Apple App Store violates competition law

LAST UPDATE: 17:26

ACM regulator in the Netherlands said today that Apple violated the competition law and ordered changes to the App Store payment policies, according to today’s decision.

Apple’s practice of requiring developers to use the in-app payment system and pay 15% to 30% commissions for digital goods purchases has been met with reactions from regulators and lawmakers around the world.

According to Reuters, the Dutch investigation into whether Apple’s practices amounted to abuse of its dominant market position began in 2019, but later narrowed its scope to focus mainly on dating apps, including Match Group’s Tinder.

“We disagree with the decision of the ACM and have appealed,” Apple said in a statement, adding that “Apple does not have a dominant position in the software distribution market in the Netherlands and has invested huge resources in helping dating app developers reach customers.” and thrive in the App Store. ”

According to Reuters, the company faces a fine of up to 50 million euros if it does not comply, while it was given until January 15 to implement the changes.
