Dutch rail workers are on strike today in the western part of the country, home to most of the population, demanding higher wages to cope with rising inflation.
Rail operator NS has announced that the strike will cause problems elsewhere in the Netherlands, including on the international network to Belgium.
“Use another mode of transport or postpone your journey. Buses cannot be substituted (for trains),” it says on its website.
The 24-hour strike is the second in three days, following a first in the north of the country on Wednesday.
Unions are protesting the suspension of collective bargaining talks with management, in which they had demanded higher wages.
Consumer prices in the Netherlands are expected to increase by 9.9% in 2022 and are forecast to increase by 4.3% next year.
The unions – FNV, VVMC and CNV – plan to hold three more 24-hour strikes: on Monday in the north-west of the country, on Tuesday in the center and on Wednesday in the south-east.
