Thousands of people gathered in Utrecht, the central Netherlands, today to protest the new coronary restrictions that came into force last weekend.
Crowds demonstrated in the city streets holding banners with slogans such as “Medical Freedom Now!” but also flags of the Netherlands. A strong police presence was visible along the route taken by the protesters.
It is the first major mobilization in the Netherlands against the measures, which include closing the night bars, restaurants and most shops, with the aim of stopping a wave of record cases of Covid-19, which threatens to take over the country’s health system.
Violent demonstrations took place in the Netherlands two weeks ago after the government announced plans to ban unvaccinated citizens from accessing public places. These plans have provoked opposition from parliament, including from parties within the ruling coalition itself, and have not been implemented since.
