Neuralink Opens Tests of Vision Restoration Implant

Neuralink has begun searching for volunteers to test its Blindsight device, which can restore vision.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted Blindsight Breakthrough Device Designation.

Neuralink CEO Elon Musk emphasized that the gadget will allow even those who have lost both eyes and the optic nerve to see.

“If the visual cortex of the brain is not damaged, even those who are blind from birth will be able to see for the first time,” the billionaire emphasized.

Musk added that the vision would initially be “low resolution, like Atari graphics.” Over time, it could improve beyond natural vision and “allow us to see in infrared, ultraviolet, or even radar wavelengths.”

Neuralink is a brain-computer interface (BCI) company. In January, the startup successfully implanted a brain chip into its first volunteer. Soon, he learned to control a computer mouse with his mind.

In August, Musk announced the success of a new operation. He noted that his startup’s BCI would not only allow paralyzed people to control simple computer interfaces with their thoughts, but would also give them exceptional abilities, including thermal or eagle vision.

The second patient learned to play video games and use 3D design software a few weeks after surgery.

Neuralink isn’t the only one integrating BCIs. Other companies like Synchron are also integrating neurochips into paralyzed patients.

Previously, a man named Mark learned to control electronic devices that support Amazon’s Alexa virtual assistant using a brain implant.
