President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) underwent a new medical procedure this Thursday (12), after surgery to drain a chronic subdural hematoma.
In an interview with CNN neurologist Tarso Adoni, from Hospital Sírio-Libanês, clarified details of the procedure.
According to the specialist, the procedure performed is called embolization of the middle meninous artery, which has become increasingly common in recent years.
“This type of procedure significantly reduces the risk of rebleeding from the hematoma,” explained Adoni.
Understanding subdural hematoma
The neurologist detailed that the subdural hematoma is located between the membrane that covers the brain (dura mater) and the brain itself. It forms when small vessels rupture after minor trauma.
Embolization aims to close the main vessel that supplies blood to these small vessels, thus reducing the chance of the hematoma reforming.
The procedure is performed in a minimally invasive way, similar to catheterization. A small cut is made in the patient’s groin, through which a catheter is introduced that reaches the brain.
The doctor then identifies the middle meninous artery and injects a substance that purposely obstructs this vessel.
Recovery and return to activities
Regarding recovery time after the procedure, Adoni stated that, in general, the patient is fully capable of returning to work and their normal routine within one to two weeks.
In the case of President Lula, as the procedure was carried out preventively, it is possible that he will resume activities even sooner.
The specialist emphasized that this type of procedure does not affect the patient’s brain functions or cognitive abilities.
“It’s different from an intracerebral hemorrhage. The subdural hematoma, once drained, does not cause any type of impairment of brain functions”, explained Adoni.
Finally, the neurologist emphasized the importance of being aware of trauma, even if apparently mild, especially in the elderly, as it can result in chronic subdural hematomas that require medical attention.
