Never so many displaced people in the world: but the fault is more climate change than war

More than 55 million. This is the number of people in the world who have been forced to move due to conflicts and natural disasters in 2020. 40.5 million have moved within their country, the highest figure in the last 10 years. A report by non-governmental organizations tells us Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre e Norwegian Refugee Council.

According to what is written in the report 30.7 million people left their homes due to natural disasters and 9.8 million due to conflict and violence. The director ofInternal Displacement Monitoring Centre, Alexandra Bilak, focuses on the unusually high data of internally displaced persons, more than double the approximately 26 million people who have fled across borders as refugees.

Worrying even more is the fact that this data comes in a year’s pandemic. Among other things, it must be borne in mind that, precisely because of the restrictions, the data may not be complete and fewer people may have sought refuge for fear of contagion. The numbers could be even higher.

Three quarters of the people who fled within their own country did so due to natural disasters, especially related to the weather: cyclones, monsoon rains and floods. Applies to Asia and the Pacific. On the Atlantic coast, on the other hand, the Atlantic hurricane season “was the busiest ever recorded”. The Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa have also seen millions of people flee due to climate change issues.

«We can only predict that, with the future impacts of climate change, these disasters become more frequent and more intense, and therefore the number of internally displaced persons increases, ”said Alexandra Bilak.
