Microsoft in early March released an update for the proprietary Microsoft Edge browser with the Startup boost feature. Unfortunately, this brought not only acceleration, but also new problems for users.

In Microsoft Edge 89, acceleration is automatically enabled without user intervention. Microsoft promises that the feature could speed up downloads by 29 to 41%.

Simultaneously with the launch of the Startup boost in Microsoft Edge, users started noticing and complaining about performance degradation, as well as a crash that causes the browser to not actually close. Microsoft Edge continues to run in the background, unbeknownst to the user. You can find out about this only by launching the “Task Manager”.
For example, one user writes:
Found multiple instances of Edge running in the background and when I disabled Startup Boost everything was back to normal. I didn’t notice any performance difference when this feature was enabled / disabled. Only that it affected my processor and caused my games to freeze horribly. “
Another unpleasant “feature” that annoys users is that the browser can open immediately after closing.
Microsoft is already aware of the problem and is investigating it. It has been decided to temporarily disable the function for now.
