New barrage of arrests of mayors and officials of the opposition in Turkey

The Turkish authorities ordered the detention of several opposition members in Istanbul and conducted police operations today against municipalities controlled by the opposition, state media. Police operations were carried out in the context of expanding the repression against the opposition and the prisoner of Istanbul. Ekrem Imamoglu, who is the main political opponent of President Tayyip Erdogan and is ahead of some polls, was imprisoned in March and is expected to be tried on charges of corruption and assistance to a terrorist group. Imamoglu denies the accusations.
