Princess Diana, who died 27 years ago in a tragic car accident in Paris at the age of 36, used to open up to her ballet teacher, Anne Allan, about the difficulties of her marriage to the now King Charles III.
The professional, with whom the late Princess of Wales developed a friendship, recalls some of these interactions in her new memoir, “Dancing with Diana” [Dançando com Diana, em tradução livre]which hits shelves on September 10th.
In a moving excerpt from the book, Anne, who lived with the mother of Princes William, 42, and Harry, 39, for nine years, claims that Diana confided her pain of not being “enough” for her then husband.
“I just can’t seem to do anything right when it comes to my husband. I love him so much and want him to be proud of me, but I don’t think he feels the same way. I don’t understand why I’m not enough for him; I think he prefers an older woman. I know he’s seeing [a agora rainha consorte] Camilla again.”
The princess began her dance lessons with Anne just weeks after her marriage to Charles in 1981. However, it was in 1986 that a visibly shaken Diana first spoke to her tutor about Camilla Parker-Bowles, who would later become Charles’ second wife.
“Why doesn’t he love me? I really don’t understand. I’ve tried everything, I’ve tried to bend to his wishes, even though I don’t always agree. There’s no affection between us, and I’m always alone. I just want to be loved. I can’t go on like this. They really expect me to just say nothing and move on. How can I do that?”
Diana and Charles separated in 1992 and formalized their divorce in 1996. The princess died in 1997. Two years after her death, Charles and Camilla publicly acknowledged their relationship.
