Britain today announced a new round of sanctions against Russia over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, targeting Russian President Vladimir Putin’s financial network, including his ex-wife and relatives.
“We are exposing and targeting the dark web that underpins Putin’s luxurious lifestyle and tightening the noose around him,” said Foreign Minister Liz Tras in a statement.
“We will continue to sanction all those who help and support Putin’s aggression until Ukraine prevails.”
Britain, acting in concert with its Western allies, has imposed sanctions on hundreds of Russians as well as on strategically important industries and companies in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The 12 new names added to the list of British sanctions include Putin’s ex-wife Lyudmila Ocheretnaya and many of his relatives who hold senior positions in major Russian companies such as Gazprom. They face freezing of their assets and travel bans.
The government says those who have been sanctioned have backed Putin in exchange for wealth, important jobs and influence in Russian affairs.
