In the modern Internet, the use of a fake avatar in social networks and forums is far from uncommon. It is very difficult to determine the authenticity of a photo by eye (and not everyone can do it), but you don’t have to do it yourself – for Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers, the free Fake Profile Detector extension from V7Labs, a company specializing in artificial intelligence technologies, has been released. This was noticed by gHacks.
Fake Profile Detector can determine whether the photo is a real person or a picture generated by a neural network. Computer-generated faces are a popular way among scammers to mislead the victim (for example, on dating sites or in the media), since stolen photos of a real person can be quite easily traced (if they are in the public domain), but this will not work with generated ones.
A cursory test of the extension showed (on the example of real shots and photos generated through Bored Humans) that it works. To check the image, just right-click on it and select the desired option (sometimes you may need to open the image in a new tab). Fake Profile Detector indicates the probability of its result with an accuracy of tenths – on several tests it was above 99%).
