New change in Italy’s political scene: The leader of the Democratic Party resigned via Facebook

Through Facebook, he preferred to announce his decision to leave the leadership of the Democratic Party, until a few hours ago, its leader, Nicola Gingaretti. This is a move that surprised much of the party leadership and its supporters, while proving once again how fluid the political scene is in Italy.

«I am ashamed that in my party, for the last 20 days, reference is made only to chairs “And in a new, open election of leadership, while in our country a third wave of coronavirus breaks out, there is the problem of unemployment, investment and the need to build a hope, especially for the new generations,” said Gingaretti.

“Since the goal is me, for the good of the party and the country, I can only make one more move to unblock the situation. “Now everyone will have to take on their responsibilities,” added the leader of the Italian center-left, according to the APE-MPE response.

The move is linked to a series of issues that have arisen since the formation of Mario Draghi’s new government: the Democratic Party has not nominated a single woman for the post and many party opponents have accused Gingaretti of lacking a “strong agenda”.

Also, two days ago, another problem arose: according to opinion polls, if former Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte takes over the leadership of the Five Stars, the percentage of “five stars” in the intention to vote could reach 22%, while the ” Democrats “will not be able to exceed 14%.

It is expected, now, the activation of the foreseen procedures which should lead to the election of a new leader of the Italian center-left.
