New CNH will be issued this Wednesday (1st); see what changes

Starting this Wednesday (1st) the printed and digital versions of the National Driver’s License (CNH) will have a new visual design, with an international identification code with translation into three languages. The new document aims to bring the country closer to internationally defined standards.

The new CNH was prepared in partnership between the National Traffic Department (Senatran), of the Ministry of Infrastructure, and the Federal Data Processing Service (Serpro) and approved by the National Traffic Council (Contran). The changes are provided for in Resolution 886, of December 13, 2021.

The replacement is not mandatory at this time: it will occur gradually for new licenses and as drivers take their CNH for the first time, renew the document, change data or issue a duplicate.

According to the national traffic secretary, Frederico Carneiro, “the new CNH will be more modern, as it will allow the inclusion of the social name and affective affiliation of the driver who so wishes, in compliance with legal determinations”. The new model will keep the QR Code, available in documents issued from 2017

What changes

The Contran resolution provides that the identification document can be issued in physical, digital or both. The decision rests with the driver.

Carneiro explains that “the code used in passports, that international code, was also incorporated, allowing the driver to board at self-service terminals at Brazilian airports” – the so-called MRZ, Machine Readable Zone, in translation.

The document will have the colors green and yellow, accompanied by the languages Portuguese, English and Spanish, to facilitate the identification of Brazilian drivers in foreign territory.

Another novelty is that the license will have a field to indicate whether the driver has a paid activity, the type of vehicle that the driver can drive and another space for noting possible medical restrictions.

As far as security is concerned, the updates will bring devices such as special fluorescent ink that glows in the dark, items visible only with ultraviolet light, and a hologram at the bottom of the document, which will make counterfeiting and fraud more difficult.

The CNH-e (digital model), available in the Digital Transit Wallet (CDT) application, also receives changes from this Wednesday. According to the president of Serpro, Gileno Barreto, “the CDT is already used by more than 35 million Brazilians”.

For the Minister of Infrastructure, Marcelo Sampaio, the idea and work of the federal government “is to simplify and facilitate the life of Brazilian citizens”.
