New composition of the House and Senate redefines division of forces in Congress

The PL won 99 seats and will have the largest bench in the Chamber of Deputies after the elections last Sunday (2). Along with the PP and the Republicans, the parties that support the president and candidate for reelection Jair Bolsonaro will add up to almost 190 federal deputies as of 2023.

The PT won 68 seats and, added to the other acronyms of the coalition that has ex-president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva as a candidate, the total reaches 122.

In the Senate, only a third of the 81 seats were renewed in this year’s elections, but that was enough for a significant change: for the first time in 25 years, the MDB will not be the party with the largest number of seats. The post will be from the PL, which elected eight senators and will have 13 seats from 2023.

In this episode of E Tem Mais, Luciana Barreto presents an assessment of the new composition of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies formed by the results of the polls.

To provide an overview of the division of forces in Congress from next year onwards and the possible effects of this on the government that will be elected on October 30, political scientist Denilde Holzhacker, a professor at ESPM, and the policy analyst at CNN Caio Junqueira.
