The USA Reject the Turkish proposal for the creation of two states in Cyprus and condemn the moves to open part of the enclave of Varosion, stressed the US Secretary of State Victoria Nuland during a hearing in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
It is recalled that yesterday, Tuesday, the head of the American diplomacy also spoke about an unacceptable decision, expressing the unequivocal condemnation of the USA and urging Ankara and the Turkish Cypriot leadership to change their policy on the issue of Varos. As characteristically noted by Anthony Blinken“The United States considers the Turkish Cypriot actions in Varosia, with the support of Turkey, to be provocative, unacceptable and incompatible with their previous commitments to participate constructively in the (Cyprus) settlement talks. “We urge the Turkish Cypriots and Turkey to reverse their decision announced today and all the measures they have taken since October 2020.”
According to the APE, Ms. Nuland spoke of a complex and multifaceted relationship with Turkey, reaffirming that the Biden government does not intend to back down on the issue of sanctions. Regarding the issue of of human rights, Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs, assured that the Biden government will continue to pressure Turkey on issues related to freedom of speech and freedom of the press.
