Seismologist Bruno Collaço, from the Seismology Center at the University of São Paulo (USP), says that residents of cities in São Paulo may continue to feel tremors over the next few days or even weeks.
Collaço explains that the tremors are associated with the strong earthquake that hit the Antofagasta region of Chile, near the border with Argentina. The magnitude was 7.4 on the Richter scale.
“The earthquakes that occur in the Andes, depending on the magnitude and depth, can be felt in São Paulo, because São Paulo is in a sedimentary basin that has the characteristic of amplifying seismic waves,” he says.
“So, especially since the earthquake occurred at night, when people are at a calmer time of day, this tremor could be felt mainly in higher neighborhoods and also by people who are inside buildings,” he adds.
Despite the scare, the expert emphasizes that it is “very unlikely” that these tremors will cause any structural damage. “This tremor will not cause any problems at such a great distance,” adds Collaço.
