New food labeling is excellent for consumers, says nutritionist

The new rules for food labeling have been in effect since last Sunday (9).

Among the main changes is the adoption of frontal nutrition labeling.

“The new rules are excellent for the consumer, they bring clarity and ease to make the choice”, evaluates the nutritionist Thais Regina Barca de Moraes.

In an interview with CNN Radio she explained that for diabetics, who must control their sugar, and for people dealing with hypertension, who must control their sodium intake, for example, change is important.

“These warnings will be written on the front of the packages, it will be easier, with ‘high in sodium’ and ‘high in sugar’, before only those who are in the area knew how to identify the strange names on the nutritional table”, he said.

For the nutritionist, “we are going to see a profile of change in the industry”, since the consumer “can take a look and understand what they put in their body, they will stop consuming certain foods and the industry will have to turn around to reduce these components. ”

The new rules, established by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) will go through a transition phase.

Products launched from October 9 onwards must already have the appropriate labels for the planned changes.
