New Genetic study overturns the theory of “disappearance” of Maya

For centuries, the story of the sudden disappearance of ancient Maya has fascinated and concerned archaeologists. But an innovative genetic study reveals a very different end: the Mayan people never left. According to the Daily Mail, researchers analyzed ancient DNA from human relics buried in Kopan, an important Mayan city in today’s Honduras. The findings question the prevailing belief that the fall of the city about 1,200 years ago also marked the complete collapse of the population. On the contrary, genetic data reveal that many of the original inhabitants of Kopan remained there and were involved with foreign populations. The same pedigree lines that walked the large squares of Kopan in the 9th century continued to live in the area for centuries, even when the political empire collapsed.
