Former government spokesman Steffen Seibert will be Germany’s new ambassador to Israel, he announced today in a tweet.
“Germany’s relationship of friendship and cooperation with Israel means a lot to Germans, to me personally. After the barbarity and monstrous crime of the Holocaust, friendship with Israel is not a matter of course for us,” Mr. Seibert said in video message in English and Hebrew and stressed that one of the most important lessons of history is that “we must stand by Israel and commit to its security.”
62-year-old Steffen Seibert worked as a journalist at the second channel of the German public television ZDF and for 11 years served as a government representative in the governments under Angela Merkel.
