Steffen Seibert, a former spokesman for Angela Merkel when the latter was German chancellor, has officially assumed the duties of Germany’s ambassador to Israel.
Seibert, 62, presented his credentials to Israeli President Isaac Herzog today.
“The friendship between Israel and Germany is a treasure and I am honored to work to strengthen it,” Seibert tweeted after the official ceremony in Jerusalem.
“Without forgetting the past, we look together to the future,” the Israeli president said, praising Germany’s commitment to Israel’s security.
Seibert was a government spokesman for more than 11 years during Merkel’s chancellorship. He previously worked as a television journalist for the public network ZDF.
In Israel, he succeeded the previous ambassador of Germany, Susanne Wassum-Reiner, whose term ended at the end of June.
