New German government agrees with stricter measures against immigration

The new German government coalition, made up of conservatives and social-left democrats, agreed on Wednesday to act to contain illegal immigration. Measures include rejection of asylum applicants at the borders, the permission of deportations to Syria and the suspension of family meetings.

Parties want to suspend family reunion for people with so -called subsidiary protection status for two years. The coalition also aims to end all federal refugee admission programs and not establish new programs in the future, according to a document.

Asylum applicants will be rejected at land borders in coordination with European neighbors, according to the statement, as immigration was a fundamental issue in national elections after the growth of the ultra right and several attacks by immigrants.

The new government wants to deport people to Syria and Afghanistan, starting with criminals and potentially dangerous people, and will abolish the “turbo naturalization” of immigrants after three years of stay, but will maintain the citizenship reforms introduced by the previous government.
