New Hagia Sophia Vandalism: Graffiti and Engraved Hearts on a Building Column

New images from vandalism in Hagia Sophia came out and a few hours after the news that believers scrape the walls to get pieces as a souvenirvideo shows names and hearts engraved on a building support column.

According to the online version birgun.net of the Turkish newspaper Birgun, the president of the Art History Association (STD) Sheriff Yasaruploaded a video on Twitter, showing the images from the new vandalism.

He says that there has been no worse “resilience” than this spectacle and speaks of cultural heritage murder, as it shows that some have painted graffiti on the support column.

“About a month and a half ago, the destruction of the gate was on the agenda. We waited for action to be taken, but no action was taken. We started touring the area and started seeing new disasters. A visitor with a bag picks up pieces from the wall. The column supporting the Hagia Sophia is full of hundreds of inscriptions. The visitors wrote their names on the walls, painted hearts“, He stated characteristically.

It is noted that voices have begun to erupt in Turkey criticizing the fate to which Hagia Sophia has been left since it ceased to be a museum and became a mosque. Typically, the Turkish newspaper Cumhuriyet had stated that Hagia Sophia “will not see in 2050 if this situation continues”on vandalism.
