New Hyundai products will be assembled at the frozen GM plant in St. Petersburg

The TASS news outlet, citing the press service of the Korean car manufacturer Hyundai, reports that starting from 2023, the brand’s newest cars will be assembled in St. Petersburg at the former General Motors plant, which was frozen in 2015. Initially, the American company opened its plant in Shushary (a municipality within St. Petersburg) in 2008 – Chevrolet, Opel and Cadillac cars were assembled there, but seven years after the release, the concern changed its business model in relation to Russia, and the plant temporarily, but as it turned out later, it was prematurely frozen.

Fortunately, according to Viktor Vasiliev, director of external relations for Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Rus, a month ago the Korean manufacturer decided to renovate the plant and launch its own production there. Of course, while the company does not name the exact list of cars that will be assembled in St. Petersburg, but the press release says about “a wide range of models”, which inspires hope. Most likely, this plant will produce parts or even assemble cars of the Kia and Genesis brands, which are part of Hyundai – now the Avtotor plant in Kaliningrad is engaged in assembling these models.

It is also worth noting that the first Russian Hyundai plant is also located in St. Petersburg, demonstrating a very impressive production capacity. For example, in 2020 alone, more than 219 thousand different cars were produced from the assembly line of this plant. Moreover, in the autumn of this year, the Hyundai Wia engine plant was opened, which already produces 1.6-liter power units. And with the opening of a new plant, Hyundai has every chance to conquer the Russian market with high-quality Russian-assembled cars, because they will obviously be cheaper than imported ones.
