New images from the monitoring cameras at the Oxxo market, on Avenida Cupecê, in the Jardim Prudência neighborhood, south zone of São Paulo, show that Gabriel Renan da Silva Soares was executed behind the back by military police officer Vinicius de Lima Britto, on November 3.
The initial version presented by the PM was that the young man had mentioned being armed, which, in his version, would justify the shooting. A market attendant corroborated this narrative, claiming that Gabriel had said: “Don’t mess with me, I’m armed, I don’t want anything that’s yours.”
Nonetheless, The new images show that the young man, who had just stolen cleaning items, slipped when he tried to run out of the market and that at no point did he mention that he was armed. In the images, it is also possible to conclude that there was no dialogue and that the police officer hit the victim in the back.
According to the civil police, Soares was hit by 11 shots. The SSP was questioned about the progress of the case, investigated by the Department of Homicide and Personal Protection (DHPP), and has not yet responded.
Reporting on social media
The images that change the hitherto official version of the facts were made available by rapper Eduardo Taddeo, who is the uncle of the executed young man, on his personal Instagram account this Monday afternoon (2). Since the day of his nephew Taddeo’s death, he has denounced the execution and contested the public agent’s version. “Another young black man from the periphery exterminated,” he declared at the time.
Crime without violence
Lawyer Fátima Taddeo, who is Gabriel’s aunt, had already given an interview to CNN in which he stated that he knew that he had committed a crime, but of lesser offensive power, which would not justify the shots fired by the military police officer.
“Theft is a crime that is committed without violence or serious threat. He wasn’t armed, he wasn’t violent. For it to be a robbery, as stated in the report, he should have been armed, threatened and violent, it wasn’t that. Self-defense is not justified when the person is not offering a threat. Gabriel’s life was worth two cleaning products”, declared Fátima.
According to her, Gabriel was working at the time, but was facing problems caused by the use of the drug K2, a type of synthetic marijuana with high destructive potential.
