The federal government announced at the end of February a reduction of up to 25% in the IPI rate (Imposto sobre Produtos Industrializados), which is levied on various items, such as refrigerators, stoves and motor vehicles.
In cars, this reduction can be between 1.7% and 1.8% of the amount paid by the user, according to a survey by the Bright Consulting consultancy. As the month of March brings new tables of values, it is already possible to see how this new rule was in practice.
The first brand to announce new values was Kia. The Cerato model, the company’s cheapest car in Brazil, went from R$132,990 to R$130,990, which represents a 1.5% reduction. Likewise, Nissan’s cheapest car in Brazil, the Versa, started to cost BRL 94,803, after the previous amount of BRL 96,090 was reduced by 1.33%.
Toyota announced reductions that varied between 0.97% and 3.88% depending on the model. The brand’s best-known car, the Corolla, had a reduction of R$ 4,210 after the IPI change. The car went from R$148,290 to R$145,380, which represents a decrease of 1.96%. So far, the only Ford vehicle that has had a price reduction announced was the Ranger pickup. The Black version, for example, had its value reduced from R$222,690 to R$218,240, by 1.99%.
