New Mitsubishi ASX for Europe turned out to be the twin brother of Renault Captur

First debuted in 2010, the Mitsubishi ASX crossover, which has gone through several restylings during this time, has moved into the second generation. True, the new Mitsubishi ASX model is designed exclusively for the European market. And this European version of the Mitsubishi crossover is a converted Renault Captur 2019 model year.

The European Mitsubishi ASX is fundamentally different from the original model for the global market. This is exactly the same Renault Captur, but with a different grille and, of course, nameplates. And even the interior of the French crossover was left untouched, essentially replacing only the Renault logo on the steering wheel with the Mitsubishi logo.

Remained unchanged and technical characteristics. Mitsubishi ASX for Europe, like its French twin brother, is offered exclusively in front-wheel drive and is offered in the base with a 1-liter 91-horsepower turbocharged three-cylinder engine and a six-speed manual transmission. There are also more advanced modifications with a “mild” hybrid of a 1.3-liter turbo four and a 12-volt starter-generator with a manual transmission or a seven-speed preselective robot to choose from. In the first case, the power of the hybrid power plant is 140 hp, and in the second it is capable of delivering 158 hp. At the top are two full-fledged E-Tech hybrids with a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine.

The new Mitsubishi ASX will go on sale in Europe in March 2023. The crossover will be assembled at the Renault plant in Spain, where the Renault Captur is now being produced. The cost of the crossover is not yet known, but most likely it will cost about the same as its twin brother, which is offered at a price of 23,400 euros.

The release of the converted Renault Captur under the guise of the new Mitsubishi ASX for Europe should not be surprising, knowing the new development strategy of Mitsubishi. Now the Japanese company is betting on the Southeast Asian market. Australia, Africa, the Middle East and South America are in second place in terms of importance for Mitsubishi. But Europe is not a priority for the brand. That is why last year it was decided not to bring global models to the European market, but instead to produce cars built on the basis of models of the Renault brand, which is part of the same alliance with Mitsubishi. In addition to the European Mitsubishi ASX, as part of the cooperation between the two brands, a Mitsubishi Colt hatchback based on the Renault Clio should appear on the market.
