The new Peugeot 408 it changes skin and becomes hybrid even in its design. The pencils of the Peugeot style center in Vélizy, near Versailles in France, change her silhouette passing from the 3 volumes of the first and second generation to the fastback design of this edition ready to face 2023. This time, however, the typical two-volume and 4-door body does not stop at the sloping and tapered tail or the very sloping rear window that incorporates the trunk. New Peugeot 408 rises from the typical sedan height to get closer to the convenience of crossover. To reinforce the stylistic features of this hybridization i blister of the wheel arches that underline the footprint of the car. The wheels also increase in diameter by adopting rims up to 20 inches. A change that, however, aligns itself with the new family feeling of the Peugeot family with the two bright front fangs embedded in the bumper and the LED rear headlights with the characteristic three claws.
The generous dimensions of the body, which reaches a length of 4.69 m and a relative pitch of 2.79 m, give the second row of seats of the Peugeot 408 very comfortable, with a knee room of almost 20 cm. Even the trunk is generous in size, with a volume of 536 liters which, with the rear seat backrests folded down, can reach 1,611 liters. Remaining inside the cockpit, the system is noteworthy Peugeot i-cockpit composed of a digital display with the function of instrument panel which varies in size and technology according to the trim level and from multifunction steering wheel on which there are the multimedia system controls and some driving aids. The connectivity aspect of the Peugeot 408 closes the touch screen 10-inch central with i-toggle fully configurable: these are shortcut touch commands to set air conditioning adjustments, telephone contacts, radio station, start an application, etc.
As for the powertrainnew Peugeot 408 is proposed with two plug-in hybrid engines. These are therefore plug-in solutions, that is, they need to connect the car to an electrical outlet (wallbox or alternating current column) to recharge the battery. We thus have the Hybrid 180 e-EAT8 featuring 2-wheel drive, a 150 hp (110 kW) PureTech engine combined with a 110 hp (81 kW) electric motor. And a more performing version is the Hybrid 225 e-EAT8. She too has 2-wheel drive, a 180 hp (132 kW) PureTech engine mated to a 110 hp (81 kW) electric motor. On both versions, an 8-speed e-EAT8 automatic transmission is fitted. Unfortunately, the performance data is still in the process of being homologated.
Regarding the accumulation of energy, the lithium ion battery in both cases it has one capacity of 12.4 kWh and a power of 102 kW. Two types of on-board chargers are available to suit all customer uses and charging solutions. There is a standard 3.7 kW single-phase chargerwhile an optional charger 7.4 kW single-phase, which we highly recommend if you need to recharge your car faster outside the home. In addition to the plug-in hybrid version, Peugeot has also established one for its new 408 thermal motorization. These are the 130 HP 1.2-liter 3-cylinder PureTech petrol engine, in line with the latest Euro 6.4 emission regulations, and an 8-speed EAT8 automatic transmission with Stop & Start system.
The new Peugeot 408 launches the gauntlet to the top-of-the-range Fastbacks in the C segment with a range of 30 driving aid systems, first-rate equipment and finishes. Among them the voice command Ok Peugeot for managing the infotainment functions without having to take your hands off the steering wheel; the emergency call E-call; electrically adjustable seats; the motorized tailgate; the laminated side windows; the air treatment system with filtering of polluting gases and particulates; L’plant Hi-Fi Premium Focal and much more. Now we just have to try it!
