New Pope: Who is Robert Prevost?

The Vatican announced on Thursday (8) that Robert Prevost was elected Pope. He chose the name Leo XIV.

Who is Robert Prevost?

Robert Prevost is 69 years old. He was born in Chicago, in the United States, but has also been a Peruvian citizen since 2015.

He is known as the “pastor of two homeland” due to his missionary performance in Peru during the 1980s.

This experience gave him fluency in Spanish and a profound understanding of the church in Latin America, making it a potential representative of the Americas as a whole.

He worked for a decade in Trujillo, Peru, and was later appointed Bishop of Chiclayo, another Peruvian city, where he served from 2014 to 2023.

PREVOST held the position of mayor of the DICASORY FOR BISPOS a strategic position that allowed him to deeply know the structure of the Church and actively participate in the appointment of bishops around the world.

In February this year, Pope Francis promoted Predost to Cardinal-Bishop. He was designated for the suburbanian diocese of Albano in the province of Rome.

In an interview with the website Vatican he emphasized his view of the role of bishops:

“The bishop is called authentically to be humble, to be close to the people he serves, to walk with them, to suffer with them, and to seek ways that he can live the gospel message among his people.”
