The Italian press today reports on new rumors related to the possible resignation of Pope Francis
According to the newspaper La Repubblica, Francis reportedly stated in a meeting with Italian Catholic bishops that he would rather resign than undergo surgery for the chronic gonorrhea that afflicts him.
At the same time, the pope has just announced that he will proceed with the “appointment” of 21 new cardinals. 16 of them will be able to take part in the election of the new pope, in the next conclave.
Finally, in August, he announced that he was going to the city of L’Aquila in central Italy for the “feast of forgiveness”, which is dedicated to Pope Celestine V, who had resigned in the 13th century.
Francis has previously said he does not rule out resigning if his forces are not strong enough to carry out his duties.
However, according to many commentators, this is unlikely to happen while his predecessor, the honorary Pope Benedict, who resigned in 2013, is still alive.
