New Russian resolution on Israel war is rejected in the Security Council

A new Russian resolution on the war on Israel was rejected in a vote at the United Nations (UN) Security Council this Wednesday (25).

There were four votes in favor, two against and nine abstentions. Therefore, there was not the minimum number of votes for the resolution to

As reported by Daniel Rittner, editorial director of CNN in Brasília, the Russian text proposes a “humanitarian ceasefire” and asks Israel to “immediately” cancel the order to withdraw Palestinians from northern Gaza.

Before the vote, the Russian representative at the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, stated that “ideological ideas and political interests” prevented the approval of the first resolution proposed by the country.

Furthermore, he said that the US text is “full of dubious and politicized provisions”, wanting to guarantee the country’s political situation in the region, without reducing tensions.

According to Nebenzya, the North American document does not condemn “arbitrary attacks against civilian targets in Gaza” and would not have the minimum final quality.

The United States’ proposal was built focusing on Israel’s “right to self-defense” and without calls for a ceasefire, according to Rittner.

The Americans’ draft spoke only of “humanitarian pauses” for access to basic supplies, such as water, food, fuel and medicine, for the civilian population in the Gaza Strip.

This Wednesday’s vote (25) was delayed, because countries requested closed diplomatic consultations before the meeting took place, as reported by Mariana Janjácomo, correspondent for CNN.

This also happened on the first day that the Brazilian resolution and another from Russia would be voted on, with the representative of the United Arab Emirates asking for more time for the topic to be analyzed and for suggestions to be made.

However, that same day, the Russian representative put the document to a vote, which ended up being vetoed. Days later, the United States vetoed the Brazilian text, which had strong support from the other members of the Council.

UN General Assembly to discuss Israel war

This Thursday (26), the UN General Assembly meets to debate the conflict in the Middle East.

At the initiative of 57 Muslim-majority countries, divided into two blocs (Arab Group and Organization for Islamic Cooperation), an alternative resolution could be voted on on Friday (27).

In the General Assembly, resolutions on war and peace are approved by two-thirds of the vote. There is no veto power for the permanent members of the Security Council.

The draft submitted by Muslim countries also largely replicates the language suggested by Brazil last week. It does not speak of Israel’s “right to self-defense”, calls for an “immediate ceasefire” and calls for the evacuation orders for Palestinians from northern Gaza to be ended.

The document also addresses the “importance of preventing further destabilization and escalation of violence in the region”, in addition to asking “all parties to exercise maximum restraint” to achieve these objectives.

However, all resolutions are recommendations and are not mandatory for compliance by the nations mentioned. Understand the role of the UN in conflicts through this article.
