New satellite images show destruction and a line of cars leaving Mariupol

New satellite images from Maxar Technologies show that more areas in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol were destroyed by intense firefights between Russian and Ukrainian military.

In one of the images, taken in western Mariupol, apartment complexes are seen burned and rubble scattered around them. Outside one of them, several buses are seen, and some are burned.

In the north of the city, apartment buildings around two schools were damaged.

Worry

French President Emmanuel Macron told Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday that he was very concerned about the situation in Mariupol. The Ukrainian city has been hit by constant bombing in recent days, according to the Élysée Palace.

According to the statement, Macron “shared his extreme concern with President Putin about the situation in Mariupol and once again demanded an immediate ceasefire.”

“The president [Macron] asked him for concrete and verifiable measures to lift the siege of Mariupol, allowing humanitarian access and an immediate ceasefire,” he added.

This week, Mariupol City Council posted an image of the city’s theater, where hundreds of people are said to have been sheltered after having suffered heavy damage on a Wednesday bombing.

THE CNN geolocated the image and confirmed that it is from the theater. Videos showed a fire in the ruins of the building.

The City Council said Russian forces had “purposely and cynically destroyed the Drama Theater in the heart of Mariupol. The plane dropped a bomb on a building where hundreds of peaceful Mariupol residents were hiding.”
