South Korea’s military announced that North Korea conducted a test launch of short-range missiles today, which traveled about 250 kilometers and fell into the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea. The weapons test came a week or so after Pyongyang announced a successful test of a new “intermediate-range hypersonic ballistic missile” designed to engage and deter “all” of its enemies in the Pacific region — and less than a week before it was sworn in and took Donald Trump, who tried during his previous term (2017-2021) to conclude an agreement with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, without success. South Korea’s acting president Choi Sang-mok said Seoul would deal firmly with North Korea’s “provocations” and denounced the new test as a violation of UN Security Council resolutions.
