A new species of octopus was discovered during a deepwater dive on the coast of Australia. The news was reported in an article published in the Australian Journal of Taxonomy on the 13th.
The species was called OPISTHOTETHIS CARNARVONENSISor Carnarvon’s octopus in honor of the place where it was found. The discovery was made by the Research Ship (RV) Investigator, led by Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), Australia’s national scientific agency.
The RV Investigator made a one month trip to research relatively unexplored habitats and marine bed biodiversity of marine parks Gascoyne and Carnarvon Canyon in Western Australia.
During the trip, the researchers used high -tech cameras, networks, and sighs to collect samples and capture images from thousands of meters below the ocean surface. From these research, many specimens were collected that were probably new species for science.
Carnarvon’s octopus is described as a small gelatinous octopus of deep water that grows up to about four centimeters in diameter. But little is little known about your ecology or lifestyle. The specimens used to describe the new species were collected at depths of 1,044 to 1,510 meters inside and around the Carnarvon Canyon and Gascoyne marine parks.
Flapjack octopuses are a type of circito octopus, and there are approximately 50 species described in the world-15 of them recorded in Australian waters. Octopus species are known for their ability to flatten the body in the shape of a pancake (and this is the origin of its name) or to rise to look like a small gelatinous umbrella.
These animals have large eyes, increasing the ability to detect prey to the poorly lit depths of their habitats. They feed on worms and small crustaceans, using their tentacles to capture and consume their prey.
