New Tatar letter: Denies participation in negotiations on the Cyprus issue without recognition of the occupied

Ersin Tatar refuses to participate in negotiations on the Cyprus issue and any form of dialogue with President Anastasiades if the occupying regime is not recognized as a state entity equal to the Republic of Cyprus. However, he chooses another tactic, indirect dialogue, through which he attempts to strengthen his claims for the recognition of sovereign equality on the island. The new tactic of the Turkish side has to do with letters prepared by Ersin Tatar and sent to the Secretary General of the United Nations and then to President Anastasiades. After his letter with four proposals on energy, which Ersin Tatar handed over to Miroslav Yedzia to be given to Antonio Guterres, he followed up a week later with a second letter.

As it became known yesterday from Ersin Tatar’s office, he sent “a second package of comprehensive proposals aimed at demining the island and dealing with illegal immigration”. As stated in a statement issued by the Turkish Cypriot leader’s office, Ersin Tatar prepared a second package of proposals which he will convey to Nicos Anastasiades and the United Nations officials through the UN Secretary General. He states that in addition to the proposal for cooperation in 4 energy sectors that he submitted on July 1, the new proposals concern demining and immigration.

Through his actions, Ersin Tatar attempts to make the illegal authorities and the so-called “ministries” equal to the legal authorities of the Republic of Cyprus. Specifically, the leader of the Turkish Cypriots requests:

Demining: According to what he stated he proposes (through his letter to the UN Secretary General) the establishment of a mechanism for the clearance of three areas under Greek Cypriot control and one area under Turkish Cypriot control. Tatar requests that this mechanism be created on the basis of the equality of the two parties on the island. It wants the participation of an equal number of authorized personnel under the supervision of the United Nations peacekeeping force. He asked the UN Secretary General to pressure the Greek Cypriot side to stop behaving negatively, in his opinion, in the whole matter.

Immigration: referring to the problem created by the illegal trafficking of migrants and ending the human tragedy, Ersin Tatar proposes cooperation at both ministerial and technocratic levels. And in this case, he proposes the establishment of a mechanism in which “authorized persons” will participate from both sides. The Turkish Cypriot side proposes that authorized persons from the immigration service, the Ministry of the Interior, the Office of the Attorney General and other involved agencies participate in the aforementioned mechanism. Referring to services and ministries, E. Tatar implies both the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Cyprus and the legal Cypriot services as well as the “Ministry” of the Interior and other “authorities” of the occupying regime.

Ersin Tatar, according to the announcement issued by his office, maintains that in this case as well as with his previous proposals, he aims “to provide the parties with substantial benefits for the two peoples in accordance with the principle of mutual benefit”. . Furthermore, he states that the second package also shows the sincere readiness of the Turkish Cypriot side to cooperate with the corresponding Greek Cypriot side.

He also goes a step further by asserting that “a positive approach by the Greek Cypriot leadership to these proposals, and the start of cooperation, will contribute to creating a common ground for the political process”. Ersin Tatar said that he has so far submitted proposals for cooperation in six important areas that will also contribute to the stability of the region.
