Temporary reception infrastructure, where more than 200 teenagers were yesterday, according to the Ministry of Health, the US government reopened, faced with flood unaccompanied minors immigrants on the southern border of the USA.

The reception center, in Cariso Springs, Texas, originally intended for oil workers, was used to receive young immigrants for a month, in July 2019, in the days of Trump.
Faced with a rapid “increase in arrivals” of unaccompanied minors and given the restrictions imposed on other structures due to the pandemic of the new coronavirus, the new government reopened it on February 22 and 214 teenagers, aged 13 to 17, were in it yesterday, the Ministry of Health clarified.
The number of underage immigrants arriving unaccompanied at the Mexico-US border had dropped to its lowest level (741) in April 2020, before resuming growth. In January, 5,871 arrivals were counted.
This number of arrivals represents “a challenge, but we will face it”, said the Minister of Internal Security, Alejandro Mallorca, denying that there is a crisis at the border.
The opening of the center of Cariso Springs, which has a nominal capacity of 700 seats, provoked the reaction of defenders of immigrants’ rights. “This cannot be a status quo,” Amnesty International said.
During an interview he gave over the weekend, Mr. Joe Biden expressed the hope that it will be able to close again as soon as possible.
The Ministry of Health intends to speed up the process of controlling the “contractors”, generally members of the children’s families, to whom the unaccompanied minor immigrants can be handed over. This will reduce the length of their stay in reception centers but also avoid their saturation if arrivals remain so high.
