A new worrying trend in TikTok wants men to post videos of purely half-witted content in which they fantasize about doing so homicides on a date. All the videos follow a similar format, where men look at their camera, listening to an excerpt from Frank Ocean’s song Lost.
Captions appear on the screen detailing the violent fantasies that men say they want to carry out, often ending in “lol”, indicating that they are supposed to be funny.
Many of the videos have now been removed from TikTokwhich says it does not allow hate speech or violent threats against groups or individuals.
“Let’s go on a picnic and I take out a knife to cut fruit. Instead I cut your throat “
One of the videos, which has now been removed from the platform, shows the creator posing behind the caption, which says: “Imagine we go on a cute picnic date and I pull out a knife to cut some fruit. “But instead I cut your throat and you just die lol.”
However, Woman’s Aid, a British charity working to end domestic violence against women and children, told the Daily Mail that joking about violence against women runs the risk of normalizing and perpetuating the violence. .
A deleted video shows a caption that reads: “Imagine taking you to the Grand Canyon for our first date and pushing you off a cliff and you die.”
Other published videos show captions: “Imagine we were going on a mini golf date and I started hitting you with the golf club and then you died lol.”
And another TikTok wrote: “Imagine watching a movie in my bed and then I start hitting you with my pillow and you die lol”. Annoying fashion has inspired another trend, where female users are using TikTok to expose those who envision dead women and have no problem uploading videos describing how they would commit such a heinous act.
A TikTok spokesman told the Mail: “Misogyny has no place in TikTok. “Content that promotes hate speech and violence against women goes against everything we stand for as a safe and inclusive platform and will be removed.”
