MSC Marie yesterday broke the record for the largest container ship to ever pass through the Panama Canal in its 110 years of operation, according to a statement from the competent authority. The Liberian-flagged ship, with a capacity of 17,640 containers, is 366 meters long and 51 meters wide. Transit costs exceeded $1.3 million. The MSC Marie became “the ship with the largest cargo capacity ever to cross the transoceanic waterway,” the Panama Canal Authority said in a press release, noting that the previous record was held last year by the Ever Max, with a capacity of 17,312 containers.
