New UK prime minister will not take office on Monday, says Truss spokesperson

New UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will not take office on Monday, a spokesperson for Prime Minister Liz Truss said, noting that discussions are taking place on the timing and choreography of the transition.

“I can confirm that the transition will not take place today,” he said, adding that there had been discussions between both leaders and King Charles III.

The announcement that Sunak had been named leader of the Conservative Party and therefore the new prime minister came on Monday after his main rival, Penny Mordaunt, withdrew her candidacy as she struggled to garner the support of at least 100 Conservative lawmakers.

Before taking over as prime minister, Sunak is still expected to meet with the British monarch Charles III, but there is still no official date for the meeting.

Sunak will take office following the resignation of Prime Minister Liz Truss – the Conservative leader with the shortest term in UK history. She stayed in the job for six weeks.
