The United States on Tuesday imposed new sanctions on Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko, who has allied himself with the Kremlin and is supporting Russia in its fight against Ukraine.
Sanctions have been imposed on Lukashenko and his wife, Halina, and provide for the freezing of assets in the United States, as well as a ban on US trade with Belarus.
The United States has also imposed sanctions on some more Russians, including a Russian judge, for human rights abuses, according to the US Treasury Department. In particular, the sanctions concern four people involved in the death of informant Sergei Magnitsky, who died under suspicious circumstances in 2009.
“Today ‘s decisions show that the United States will continue to impose specific and significant sanctions on those involved in corruption or gross human rights abuses. We condemn Russia’s attacks on humanitarian corridors in Ukraine and call on Russia to “a brutal war against Ukraine,” the statement said.
The United States imposed sanctions on members of Lukashenko’s family in December following an immigration crisis on Belarus’ border with Poland that led to allegations of human rights abuses.
The United States has also imposed sanctions on Belarus over its role in the Russian invasion of Ukraine, including controls on exports to Belarus and a ban on the transfer of technology and software to Russia through the pro-Russian country.
