The United States today sanctioned three Russian television stations, banned accounting and consulting services, and imposed sanctions on Gazprombank executives in retaliation for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Reuters reported.
The new sanctions are the latest US attempt to increase pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin following his country’s attack on Ukraine, and come as President Joe Biden met by teleconference with G7 leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Z. to discuss the war.
The crackdown on Gazprombank executives was the first to affect the giant Russian gas exporter, as the United States and its allies avoided taking action that could lead to disruptions in gas supplies to Europe.
“This is not a complete blockade. We do not seize Gazprombank’s assets or prohibit any transactions with Gazprombank,” a senior Biden government official told reporters. “What we are signaling is that Gazprombank is not a safe haven and that is why we are imposing sanctions on some of the top executives of its companies to create a chilling effect.”
Eight executives of Sberbank, which owns a third of Russia’s banking assets, have been added to the sanctions list. Moscow Industrial Bank and its 10 subsidiaries were also added.
The new export controls were aimed at directly undermining Putin’s war effort, including controls on industrial machinery, bulldozers, wood products, engines and fans. The European Union is moving in parallel with additional controls on chemicals that directly fuel Russia’s military effort, the official said.
The arms company Promtekhnologiya, which manufactures weapons, was sanctioned, along with seven shipping companies and a ship towing company. The White House also announced that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission will suspend licenses to export special nuclear material to Russia.
The television stations that were sanctioned are directly or indirectly controlled by the state, including Channel One Russia, Russia-1 and NTV Broadcasting Company.
Americans will be barred from providing accounting and consulting services to Russians, although legal services are still allowed.
