Rumors about Apple launching a new version of Apple TV have been going around for months now. Part of the reason is that the Apple TV has been around for the past 14 years and has not really come up with as frequent upgrades as it would have been ideal. And secondly, the last upgrade even left the users with some flaws here and there and a sloppy remote control. Also, it is still quite expensive, with its 32GB storage streaming device version at around $179. So, it’s high time to receive an upgrade!
The fourth-generation Apple TV was first introduced in 2015, and its revamped and improved version with a Siri remote came in 2017. The same year, Apple TV 4K also came with a good design and functionality, but there has been no upgrade as such since then.
However, now Mark Gurman from Bloomberg seems to be pretty confident that the Apple TV’s new version is likely to come around the summer of 2021 with some design and functionality improvements and better remote control.
A14 Bionic chip in the Apple TV
One of the most prominent changes that are going to be included in the new Apple TV streaming device is the replacement of the A10X Fusion chip with one of the three variants of the latest A14 Bionic.
A14 Bionic chip was first introduced in September 2020 with the launch of the fourth-generation iPad Air. Later, this chip was launched with iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro.
Storage Configurations
According to some other leakers, the new Apple TV device is likely to come in two storage configurations: 64 GB and 128 GB. A rumor suggests that this project is undergoing the codename ‘Neptune T1125,’ however, nothing in this regard is confirmed yet and things can be different once Apple finally releases the upgrade officially.
Apple TV Plus
While the Apple TV 4K is the hardware that connects to a user’s TV to access various apps, Apple TV Plus is Apple’s streaming subscription-based service. It allows the users to watch completely ad-free original shows and movies that are made under Apple Original’s umbrella. This service also provides access to a variety of other licensed content too.
According to Mark Gurman, to compete with competitors like Amazon, Google, Netflix, Hulu, etc., and to get Apple TV Plus more subscribers, Apple needs to improve its hardware as soon as possible.
Some Rumored Features
A ‘Kid’s mode’ is likely going to show up in this new Apple TV, along with a voice command for Siri if the remote is lost. Screen Time is also likely to come in this upgraded version.
