The possible accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO would have consequences for these countries and for European security, the Russian Foreign Ministry warned today.
“These countries” must realize the implications of such a measure for our bilateral relations and for the European security architecture as a whole, “ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a statement.
“Joining NATO can not boost their national security. De facto (Finland and Sweden) will be NATO ‘s front line,” he said.
Helsinki and Stockholm are considering joining the Atlantic Alliance in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Yesterday, Thursday, Russian Vice President and Vice President of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said that if Finland or Sweden joins NATO, Russia will strengthen its military means, mainly nuclear, in the Baltic Sea and near Scandinavia.
Finland, which shares about 1,300km of border with Russia, will decide “in a few weeks” on a possible NATO bid, according to its prime minister.
Sweden, for its part, does not rule out joining the Western military alliance, which seems more cautious than its neighbor.
Russia considers the Alliance an existential threat, and the Kremlin has justified its attack on Ukraine, citing Kiev’s Atlantic ambitions and Western political and military support in the neighboring country.
