Its Secretary General NATOJens Stoltenberg, warns that one should not expect that the end of the armed conflict in Ukraine it will come soon, in an interview published today, as the Ukrainian counter-offensive to retake territory held by Russian troops continues.
“Most wars last much longer than anticipated when they begin”emphasizes Mr. Stoltenberg in the interview he gave to the media of the German Funke group.
“Consequently we must prepare for a long war in Ukraine”he adds.
The armed conflict began on February 24, 2022, when Russian armed forces invaded Ukrainian territory.
The Ukrainian army has been conducting a counteroffensive since June to push back Russian forces in the south and east of the country, but its operations have only allowed a limited number of communities to be recaptured.
“We would all like peace to come quickly”says Mr. Stoltenberg.
“But at the same time we have to recognize [ότι] if the president [της Ουκρανίας Βολοντίμιρ] Zelensky and the Ukrainians would stop fighting, their country would no longer exist.”
“If the president [της Ρωσίας] and Russia lay down their arms, we will have peace”he adds.
Regarding Kiev’s desire to join the alliance, Mr. Stoltenberg assures that “there is no doubt that sooner or later Ukraine will be in NATO”.
Kiev came closest to this at the military alliance summit in July, he explains.
“When this war ends, we will need security guarantees for Ukraine. Otherwise, history may repeat itself.”warns the Norwegian in his interview.
