The United States has said it is watching closely for a resurgence of tensions on the two countries’ borders. “We have been informed that the two sides are communicating and calling for restraint in order to achieve a peaceful escalation of the situation,” was a message from US Foreign Secretary Ned Price.
Pasinian resigned as prime minister in late April, with parliamentary elections scheduled for June 20th. However, he remains in office as an official.
The Ministers of Defense and Foreign Affairs of Armenia did not want to comment on the announcements of the caretaker Prime Minister.
Azerbaijan and Armenia clashed in autumn 2020 over control of the Nagorno-Karabakh separatist enclave. a war that claimed the lives of more than 6,000 people and resulted in the defeat of Yerevan.
Despite the ceasefire signed under the auspices of Moscow and the deployment of Russian troops, tensions in the region remain. Last month, the two countries accused each other of opening fire in Nagorno-Karabakh.
