New Year’s Eve forecast: how 2023 should be received in Brazil

Health, money, hope. These are just some of the wishes for the year that is about to begin.

Among what is to come and what we can predict, so far, are the weather conditions for the turning point. The expectation is that Brazil will have a very different scenario in this context.

Storms can reach areas of Rio de Janeiro, southern Minas Gerais and northern São Paulo. As well as the western half of Mato Grosso, Amazonas, Southeast and Northeast of Pará, Maranhão and Piauí. In Rio Grande do Sul, the last day of the year will be sunny and intensely hot.

The rains are an effect of the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ), which operates between the Midwest and the Southeast, but which begins to deconfigure on Saturday (31).

In addition, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), the main rain-producing system in northern Brazil, reinforces instability in the region, caused by heat and high air humidity. In the Northeast of the country, the Upper Level Cyclonic Vortex (VCAN) also increases cloudiness and conditions for rain.

At night, rain can fall with low intensity, in an isolated and temporary way in the capital Rio de Janeiro , for example. Throughout Saturday, there is a forecast of heavy rain with thunderstorms, interspersed with brief openings of sun in the capital of Rio de Janeiro. The expected accumulated precipitation is high, with potential for disturbances on the last day of the year, with chances of flooding. Temperatures will be milder, at an average of 29°C maximum.

In Sao Paulo , rain showers are expected from the afternoon, including in the capital, and may be strong in the areas to the North that border the state of Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro. The sun appears more this Saturday and warms up again in the metropolitan region. During the night, these instabilities lose strength and the weather becomes steady again. There is no forecast of rain for the turn of the year in the capital and during the early hours of Sunday (1st).

The night should have a clear sky in Porto Alegre and Florianópolis. São Paulo will have a lot of clouds, but the turn to 2023 should be without rain.

The first day of 2023 begins sunny in Santa Catarina and in a good part of Rio Grande do Sul, including in the capitals, and along the coasts of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. On the other hand, it may rain lightly in Curitiba.

Once again, the northern half of Brazil is subject to showers of rain, with the possibility of thunderstorms in many areas of the Southeast region, except for the northern portion of Minas Gerais, throughout the Midwest and North of the country and in a large part of Northeast, except in the Center-East and South of Bahia.
