Linux users who own AMD APU-based computers are suddenly given a New Year’s gift in the form of a significant boost in the performance of the integrated graphics core of such processors.
The Linux 5.16 kernel is said to provide tangible performance gains for at least the last two generations of AMD APUs through a number of changes and enhancements. Tests were conducted on Ryzen 7 Pro 5850U based on Zen 3 architecture and Ryzen 5 5500U based on Zen 2 architecture.
The gain in general was about 5-10%, but in some applications of some assemblies it reached 28%! This is more than the new generation of processors often provides.
The authors of the testing note that such an impressive increase came as a surprise to them.
This improvement in Linux 5.16 was both startling and unexpected. Linux 5.16 has many new features, including improvements to the AMDGPU kernel driver, but this acceleration for Radeon Vega graphics came as a surprise as no optimizations were announced and support for Vega graphics is mature enough at this stage. It could also be a combination of CPU related improvements in Linux 5.16
