New York far beyond Manhattan: tips from a Brazilian insider on the Big Apple

Did you know that right near Queens, New York, a neighborhood called Flushing has a huge eastern community and is full of cool restaurants? Or that in the West Village, Emily sells those traditional Detroit-style triangular pizzas? Not?

There is nothing better than getting to know a city with tips from those who live in it. Once again, CNN Travel & Gastronomy landed in Nova York looking for indications from a true insider and, this time, he spoke with the journalist Laura Peruchi, content producer who lives there since 2013.

“I didn’t even want to meet the USA”, but as soon as I arrived here it was at first sight!”, she jokes, who loves to share suggestions for all tastes and budgets on her social networks.

And as Laura always points out: New York goes far beyond Manhattan, there are many things to do outside the island as well. The borders of the United States for Brazilians are open, but the pandemic is not over yet – all precautions must be taken. To tips!

Tours outside of Manhattan

New York always presents us with something new. Even in what is considered very touristic, there are several ways to make the classic. The suggestion is to add something more creative and striking, such as the evening tour around the Statue of Liberty aboard a sailing boat that historian Gisela Gueiros mentioned in her nominations.

But the ideal is to realize that the city goes beyond Manhattan and that there are many things to do in others boroughs – as they call the five districts of NY. off the island, i love Coney Island, which is part of Brooklyn and a popular summer destination – in addition to the beach, there is the famous Luna Park, with a historic roller coaster from 1927.

I also highly recommend Flushing, a neighborhood belonging to Queens that has a predominance of the eastern community and is full of amazing restaurants – it is very different from vibe de Chinatown.

There is the Corona Park, where the US Open tennis games take place and which has the Unisphere, an imposing monument in the shape of a terrestrial globe that was commissioned for the 1964 World’s Fair.

Within the same park there is the Queens Museum, with visual arts exhibitions aimed at people in the New York metropolitan area. The museum is home to Panorama, the jewel of the entire collection, which is a large scale model of the entire city designed for the 1964 Fair. ”.

Gastronomy

In terms of gastronomy, my most popular tip is the cookie from Levain Bakery, which always has a queue, but it is well worth the wait. The cookie discs are well filled, come warm and with melting chocolate. have already become a must in the city!

There is also the Emily, a restaurant I really like in the West Village. On the menu there are pizzas, Italian starters and only one hamburger – it is worth mentioning that, in addition to being round, they also serve Detroit-style pizza, which is rectangular.

Emily is a very small restaurant in a charming region that is very worthwhile. It’s not on the circuit of famous and trendy houses, but everyone I took there loved it.

cheap NY

My first tip to save money in the city is to take the subway. Many people are afraid of this type of transport, but in fact it is one of the best ways to explore the city. The suggestion is to adopt it as the main means of transport and divide the trip into regions.

The ideal is to plan a day or a period for a certain region and explore it with the help of subway lines and good old-fashioned walking. It’s a delight to get to know the city on foot, as we always discover something along the way. The more you research and plan, the more you’ll discover cool stuff.

Speaking of public transport, in addition to the subway and the bus, the city has a ferry system, the NYC Ferry, which is the ferry transport. There are several lines where you pay a small price, around US$2.75, and move to other parts of the city through the waters of the rivers.

A good example is the ER line (which corresponds to the East River), which runs under the three bridges on the East side: Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge e Williamsburg Bridge. It’s a beautiful tour by itself and you pay a trifle.
